Spring Float Season Through the month’s of April and May Colorado Skies Outfitters owner Theo Anest works as a guide for St Pete’s Fly Shop on the Grey Reef and Miracle Mile sections of the North Platte River. Spring is a great time to tie into hungry North Platte rainbows shaking the winter blues!

Summer Hopper Fishing! We return to the North Platte in August for the thick of the hopper season. This is one of the rare times when north platte trout can be caught on dry flies.  There is simply nothing like seeing a 24″ rainbow erupting on a big dry fly along the grassy banks.  This is also a great time for big golden stone fly dries on the Miracle Mile.

October Trophy Brown Trout Hunts: If the thought of hunting a 30+ brown trout sounds enticing then Grey Reef and/or miracle mile is the place to do it.  North Platte brown trout eat like brown trout are supposed to.  They want a big meal and in the fall they want it just a little more.  The Reef holds large resident browns and the Miracle Mile receives a large lake run migration out of Pathfinder Reservoir.  Skip the crowds on the Dream Stream and come see the North Platte–it won’t disappoint!

About the River
For our purposes, the Miracle Mile and Grey Reef tailwaters make up the lower North Platte. While not as aesthetically pleasing as the upper reaches of the river, the lower reaches of the river on its way to Nebraska provide year round opportunities to catch some truly large trout. While some public sections provide wade opportunities, this is primarily drift boat water for us. Below “the Mile”, the river disappears into a series of reservoirs and re-emerges below Grey Reef reservoir as one of the most productive stretches of water in Wyoming. The lower river does offer some dry fly opportunities, however these stretches are primarly indicator nymphing waters where SJWs, small midges, and other tailwater offerings are snatched up by large fish that will test your equipment on a regular basis. As the water warms in the spring, or during the brown trout spawn in the fall, a double streamer rig on a sinking line can be deadly. Fast action rods in the 5-7 weight range, along with heavy leaders and tippet, are the norm in these stretches.
