Never fished either these rivers before so I signed up for a 2 day guided trip with Theo. Pretty incredible trip – I had been looking forward to it for months and I wasn't dissapointed.
Grey Reef
We put in below the dam there at Alcova first thing in the morning and fished the section right below the spillway. Theo rigged up this narly weighted rig that would get past the "little fish" 10 – 14in and get down quickly so the bigger fish would get a chance before the "little ones" had a chance to get the flies. No indicator….just trust that you will know when you get a hit. Almost every cast was a fish…it was rediculous. I could have stayed there all day! We moved down into the lower section of the river and before we jumped into the boat Theo points to a section of water and says "there ought to be a fish waiting right there – cast up and let it drift in" immediate hook up with a fish so big and strong 3x was no match and broke off. I called Theo more than once the Fish Whisperer because his ability to read and understand the river was freaky sometimes. Great day – lost count on how many fish we got into. Red head leach was the bug of choice.
Miracle Mile
Very different river than the reef…spectacular scenery…more Colorado like. We were able to put in very close to the dam, much closer than we thought we could get to, the water was "dirty" but with big bugs and a pink worm "stinger" rig we had no issue and landed at least 12 fish just in the canyon….not as big as the day before but still strong healthy fish. It started slowing down mid afternoon so Theo changed bugs and used "The fly formally known as Prince" next cast….hard take with a 2 foot leap out of the water! It was like what you see on one of the fly fishing shows.
Amazing trip, learned so much and will do it again next year – Thanks Theo.
